Proper Lens Care

Proper Lens Care

Taking care of your eyeglass lenses can be the difference between seeing clearly for the life of your glasses, or having to replace them early from excessive scratching and improper maintenance.

Keep in mind that many anti-reflective treatments and non-glare coatings help protect against dust, debris, oil, water, and smudges. These can help your glasses stay clean longer, but they also need special care. Remember that you should never use commercial cleaners on your lenses. Talk to us about the best way to care for your eyewear and we’ll be happy to make suggestions on products we recommend.

Proper Lens Care Instructions

Unfortunately, 80% of lens scratches occur by cleaning eyewear incorrectly. Protect your investment by following these proper lens care instructions.

Begin by rinsing your lenses with warm water and a mild soap without additives. You may also use an approved lens cleaning solution provided by your eyecare professional. Never use glass cleaner or other household cleaners. Avoid all chemicals including hairspray, perfume, and cologne, which are harmful to eyeglass lenses.

Next, dry your lenses with a soft, lint-free cloth. You may also use a microfiber cloth specially designed for your eyewear. Never use facial tissue or paper towel as they will scratch your lenses. Finally, never leave your eyeglasses in direct sunlight or in a hot car. The heat can damage your lenses as well as your eyeglass frames. Additionally, never leave your eyeglasses facing downward. Always keep them in a case when not in use.

To our patients,

The safety and well-being of our employees and our patients is always our priority, and we recognize the important role we play in providing comprehensive eye care throughout the Des Moines area. Given the continued spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) within our community and throughout our nation, we are taking extensive measures to prevent any further spread of the virus. We are constantly monitoring this pandemic and will continue to look for recommendations from the American Optometric Association as well as our local Iowa branch.

To minimize risk of COVID-19 transmission, we are asking any patients with any cold or flu-like symptoms (cough, shortness of breath, sneezing, or fever), have traveled outside of the United States, or believe to have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 to reschedule their appointments. Hand washing, social distancing, and self-isolation are still the best ways to prevent this virus from spreading more widely. We are committed to providing the best care to you and will continue to give you the best guidance we can.

We appreciate everyone's cooperation during this time and ask for your understanding if you are someone who is asked to reschedule your appointment to a later time.

Thank you again and be well!
